Material ScienceMass production has made it possible to manufacture many materials in large quantities, but few of these materials are suitable for use in medicine. Although it would be great to be able to replace lost skin or worn-out joints with synthetic equivalents indistinguishable from the original, current technology offers only crude imitations of naturally occurring biological materials. Therefore, new innovations in material sciences could have the potential to revolutionize medicine. Dr. Christopher Bettinger is using material science in his work to develop novel medical implants which could revolutionize weight loss, chronic pain and infections.
